Will the clay crack when I put it in the soil?

Only if forced into dry, hard soil — which is true of any terracotta. Pre-dig a small hole first, soak the spike with cool water before burying it for around 10 minutes, and ease it in gently. It takes thirty seconds and we've never had a crack report from someone who followed those three steps.
